The theme of the circus has been occupying Jim Unsworth for some time, and the elephant in particular has featured in most of his recent sculpture - bulging out of containers, trembling on drums and being put into altogether unlikely situations. This drawing of three elephants, an expressive work in line, shows how Unsworth explores his su6ject. A linear approach to drawing is not always expected of sculptors, but in Unsworth's case it mirrors his method of starting a new sculpture with outlines in forged metal rods before filling in with a collage of welded steel to make the solid form. Three elephants also acknowledges the Indian deity, Ganesh, who is often portrayed with three heads. |
